Description	:	William A. Burkett was born in Herman, Nebraska in 1913 to William H. Burkett and Mary Dill and married Juliet Ruth Johnson in Winnetka, Illinois on 5 October 1940. He received his law degree from the University of Nebraska in 1936, served in the Coast Guard Reserve during World War II, and from 1945 to 1950 worked in Washington DC as a special agent for the US Treasury. Burkett began his services as a Cabinet member for Gov. Goodwin J. Knight in 1953. He held the following positions during his tenure: Director of the California Department of Employment; Chairman of the Employment Stabilization Committee; Director of the State Manpower Commission; State of California Superintendent of Banks; Director of the State Department of Investments; Chairman of the State Securities Commission; and Chairman of the State Refugee Relief Commission. He also served as the President of the National Association of Supervisors of State Banks. He established the Security National Bank of Monterey County in 1961, which was sold to First Interstate Bank (now known as Wells Fargo) in 1966. He was an avid proponent of proper honor and burial of United States veterans in the nation's veteran's cemeteries.
