He married, first, Mehitable Nelson, in DeKalb County, Illinois, in 1864. His family and some others then went to Nemaha County, in southeast Nebraska, the bigger town of Omaha to the north. US Censuses in Wisconsin in 1850, in Dodge County, and in Illinois in 1860, in DeKalb County, showed her with many siblings, both older and younger. Her parents were James Nelson, an immigrant from England, and Martha, reported as from NY/and or Canada. Mehitable (spelled various ways) was born in Michigan circa 1843-1844, the last Michigan-born sibling maybe the one born 1846-1847. Another sibling was born in Wisconsin early in 1850, then the remainder, in Illinois. By the parents' 1865 State Census, Mehitable had married and gone to Nebraska. Her parents had also moved with those children still at home, from DeKalb County, to Boone County, Illinois. ) After Mehitable's death in Nemaha County in 1866, his mother reported that he married her sister, Emma Nelson. (Illinois records show he and Emma married in Boone County, Illinois, in 1867. There is no Emma obvious in the Nelson's three Censuses cited, so perhaps she used a middle name once away from her parents. Mehitable's sister Phebe was once listed as Phebe E., so perhaps the E stood for Emma. A common reason for marrying a sister in that era was so any tiny children could have someone they knew and loved as a stepmother.) William's 1870 US Census is difficult to find, until realizing he went by his middle name of Andrew at the time. (Perhaps there were too many William Butterfields still living? He and Emma were in Fayette County, Iowa, in the town/township of Scott, farming, with three young daughters. The eldest was identified as "Allice" age 4, born Nebraska, clearly Mehitable's daughter. The middle child had turned 2. That was "Hattie" (an old-time nickname for Harriet), born Illinois, named as Emma's daughter in other records. The baby was Henrietta, age 5 months, born Iowa. The cemetery of Pleasant Hill (Delaware County) is named in his death record, as are his parents (mother's maiden name respelled as Shelly) and his birth state of Ohio. He had an aunt buried there, Diana Butterfield (1796-1885), who had married Cornelius Van Benschoter, aka Van Benschoten (1790-1856). Their family had gone to visit a son in scenic northwest Iowa, from their Ohio location along Lake Erie (west of Cleveland). where they had raised their own children. Cornelius fell ill and died there. A sister of Cornelius V.B. was Catrina V.B.,, born in NY state, who had married Matthew Sheley, before the two moved to Ohio, after involuntarily losing title to their farm land in NY. They were parents to this William's mother, Elinor. The Van Benschoten and Butterfield families were thus tightly inter-related.
