Converse of Augusta Dies of Cancer - He Was an Old Timer in That Part of the State Augusta, April 11--William A. Converse, one of the best known stockman of Lewis and Clarke county, and a pioneer of Montana, died early Friday morning at his home in Elk Creek. The cause of death was cancer. Mr. Converse spent the last year in Helena, hoping to be benefited by the treatment received there. But his physician held no hope of recovery, and he returned home, where he remained until the time of his death. Mr. Converse was born Dec. 14, 1851, in Huron, Wayne county, N.Y., and came to Montana 27 years ago, landing in Fort Benton in 1878. He was married at Sparta, Wis., in 1874, to Helen, the eldest daughter of Fred F. and Alvira Walrath. Mr. Converse is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. C. J. Barlow of Great Falls, Mrs. A. W. Wendling of Helena, and Henry Converse of Elk Creek. Mr. Converse was a member of the Woodmen of the World, and that order had the funeral arrangements in hand.
