Sentiment to stay in the Union was high, and remained so throughout the war, yet hundreds of Randolph County boys marched off to fight, many never to return. "The Randolph Hornets," Company M, 22nd Regiment North Carolina Troops, earned a reputation for their grit and Determination in battle. This history of the Randolph Hornets includes articles written by Sergeant John T. Turner in 1914 recalling his experiences, and information on the company battle flag, its capture and its eventual return. A complete roster of the company includes genealogical information and short biographies for several of the men. The final chapter covers the local reenactment group based on the company. Woosley, William August was born 13 June 1845 in Friedburg, Davidson County, NC, to Joseph and Lavinia Krouse Woosley. By the time of the 1860 Census, he resided in Forsyth County, NC. The county was formed in 1849 from Stokes County, NC. He was still a resident there when he enlisted at Camp Holmes, near Raleigh, on 1 July 1864 for the war and was assigned to Co. M. 22nd Regt. NC Troops, the "Randolph Hornets." From 1 July 1864 to the time he was captured, the major battles of the 22nd Regt. were: The Petersburg Siege, Ream's Station, Fort Harrison, and Jones' Farm. He was captured by the enemy at Petersburg, Virginia, about October 21, 1864 and was confined at Hart’s Island, New York Harbor, until being released on 20 June 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Following the war his family moved to the vicinity of Knob Nobster, Missouri, and later to Kansas, finally settling in Chanute, KS about 1898. He was married on 22 April 1866 to Nellie Mahalia Snipes, said to be the daughter or niece of Chief Red Cloud and his wife Ayala, and raised by a white family named Snipes. August became blind soon after the birth of his fourth child, probably the latent result of war injuries, and made his living keeping bees and grinding sorghum. The family also relates that during the war he pulled a bad tooth himself, filling the hole with a bit of tobacco and a whittled piece of hickory wood. The wooden “tooth” remained in his mouth up until his Death, which occurred on 23 July 1906 in Chanute, Neosho County, KS. He was buried there in the Elmwood Cemetery.
