Loomis was a son of Sampson Loomis (1809-1865) native of Leban, New London County, CT and Caroline Wilson (1808-1896) native of LaColle, Quebec. The Loomis, Brewer and Wilson families travelled west from Clinton County, NY and settled in West Williams township in Middlesex County about 1855. In 1862, William was first married to Ann Amor (died Mar.1,1863, aged 22 years and 11 days), d/o Thomas & Mary Amor. She died in childbirth the following year. Their son was named William Jr. (1863-after 1920) who spent his adult life in California. After his marriage William Sr. enlisted in the Union army of the American Civil War. He was likely away when his wife died and his son was born. On Jan. 14, 1866 Willilam Sr. married Rebecca Mackey, daughter of James Mackey and Julia Jones. They moved to St. Clair County, MI and had a son there, James Albert Loomis. Later they moved to South Dakota where they remained. Williams's siblings were Maria (Sears Mott), Margaret L. (Edwin R. Dobbie), Elizabeth (Wilson Blanshard), George H. (Ann Mackey and Mildred Roby Dulmage), Robert S. (unmarried), Oscar B.(Mary McLeod), twins Orrin and Orson (both unmarried), Stevens A.
