Description	:	William B. STRICKLAND was born in Bartholomew county, Ind., Feb. 9, 1843, and died at Marshalltown, Iowa, Nov. 5, 1917, aged 74 years, 8 months and 22 days. Deceased was the eldest of twelve children of A.G. and Charlotte STRICKLAND. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1856, and in 1861 he returned with his parents to Indiana. In 1865 he returned to Iowa; and in 1871 he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane THOMPSON in Van Buren county, Iowa., who died Feb. 10, 1915. Five children were born to this union -... Read More	William B. STRICKLAND was born in Bartholomew county, Ind., Feb. 9, 1843, and died at Marshalltown, Iowa, Nov. 5, 1917, aged 74 years, 8 months and 22 days. Deceased was the eldest of twelve children of A.G. and Charlotte STRICKLAND. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1856, and in 1861 he returned with his parents to Indiana. In 1865 he returned to Iowa; and in 1871 he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane THOMPSON in Van Buren county, Iowa., who died Feb. 10, 1915. Five children were born to this union - Dora, Charlotte, Vinnie, Elmer and Lena, of whom the only survivors are the first two, Mrs. E. L. STARK, of Clear Lake, and Mrs. O.R. GAUNT of Marshalltown. The other children died of diphtheria in the winter of 1889-90. Three brothers and two sisters also survive, Samuel, John E. and Jacob STRICKLAND and mesdames Marth PEDEN and Clay HANCOCK, all of Davis county. Mr. STRICKLAND enlisted in Co. E. Eighty-third Indiana infanty Sept. 9, 1862, at Lawrenceburg, Ind. and was honorably discharged June 2, 1865, at Washington D.C. He took part in many of the great battles of the civil war, and, like so many of its veterans, gave the best part of his young manhood to his country. He was wounded at the battle of Lookout Mountain and bears the marks of battle to the grave. But taps have sounded for him at last. One by one the Grand Army of the Republic is being musterd out. God grant that they may have joined the Grand Army of the Redeemed. In early life deceased joined the Christian church, and while living in Gilman he worshiped in the Methodist church. Prior to about three years ago Mr. STRICKLAND was for many years a resident of Gilman and was highly respected and esteemed as a man of sterling integrity and honor. He was a man with a big heart and as a neighbor and friend none could surpass him. No sacrifice of time and strength was too great for him to make in order that he might minister to his neighbors in sickness. His memory will ever be cherished by those whose privilege it was to know him best The funeral was held Wednesday of last week. Brief services were held at the GAUNT home in Marshalltown. The remains were then brought to Gilman and the services were held in the Methodist church, the pastor, Rev. N.F. Norton, officiating. Many old friends were in attendance. The floral offerings were beautiful and many. Interment followed in Prairie View cemetery beside his wife. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were, Samuel and J.E. STRICKLAND; Mrs. Martha PEDEN; Alva, Elroy and Odell STRICKLAND; Mr. and Mrs. Emery PEDEN; Mrs. Stella BEGGS; and Mrs. H.L. STARK, all of Floris, Rev. and Mrs. D.S. THOMPSON, Eldora, Mrs. Eliza SMITH, Waterloo; Mrs. H. O. HYATT, Mrs. Wm. BUTLER, C.T. STEWART, John McMAHON, Geo. THOMPSON and family and C. R. GAUNT and family of Marshalltown, E.L. STARK and wife, Clear Lake; Mr. and Mrs. James STARK, Newburg; Mr. and Mrs. N.J. MOEGART, Mrs. A.J. BREEDER and John WALKER, Grinnell, Russell, King and Jesse CROOKS, Chester.
