Description	:	William Menke, son of Valentine and Anna (Freitag) Menke, was born May 28, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and passed away Saturday, December 31, 1994, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 76 years, 7 months and 2 days. After the death of his mother, when he was six months old, Bill was brought by train to Nelson and lived with relatives in the Lawrence area. He attended St. Stephen's School. During World War II, Bill was drafted into the military. He was assigned to the U.S. Army, 85th Division, 337th Infantry Regiment. While serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, he participated in the Rome-Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley Campaigns where he was wounded in action twice. His military decorates include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medals. December 7, 1945, in Hastings, Nebraska, Bill was united in marriage to Doris Ray. To this union were born four children. They made their home in Nelson, where he owned and operated the Menke Garage over 15 years. He later worked for the Federal Government from which he retired in 1979. Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson, Nebraska, for 47 years. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans in Hastings, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts, both of Nelson. Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant daughter, Patricia Ann; a sister, Eleanor Severson; and a brother, Walter who passed away December 27, 1994. Survivors include his wife Doris, of Nelson; one daughter, Mrs. Julian (Judy) Pickens of Sun Lake, Arizona; two sons, SMSgt. Ronald Menke and wife Lan, of Moreno Valley, California, and Robert Menke of Arlington, Texas; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 3, 1995, at 10 a.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson, Nebraska, with Father Frank Machovec officiating. Music was provided by violinist Ivan Miller playing selections of "One Day At A Time" and "Amazing Grace" with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist. Commentator was Leon Elsey. Casketbearers were Leon Elsey, Duane Ehlers, Jerome Mazour, Bud Ferebee, Robert Frahm and Ed Sekora. Burial with full military rites by American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Nelson was in Nelson Cemetery. A Rosary Service was held Monday, January 2, 1995, at 7:30 p.m. at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home in Nelson.
