She passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 80 years and 4 months. She passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 80 years and 4 months. Doris attended rural school and graduated from Nelson High School in 1937. She attended Normal Training for one year, then taught in rural Nelson schools. She worked at Dutton-Lainson in Hastings during World War II, was a school cook and Clerk December 7, 1945, in Hastings, Nebraska, Doris married William "Bill" Menke. This union was blessed with four children. Doris loved her family. She enjoyed making cookies, traveling, playing cards, her many friends and eating out. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altar Society, Nelson American Legion Auxiliary and a charter member of the Nelson VFW Auxiliary. She was chairperson of the bloodmobile for 21 years. Doris was a past member of the Nelson Good Samaritan Center Board. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Bill, on December 31, 1994; an infant daughter, Patricia Ann; one brother, Wilfred Ray; and three sisters, Nola Ray, Fay Beavers and Hazel Wheeland. Survivors include one daughter, Judy Pickens of Mesa, Arizona; two sons, Ron Menke and his wife, Lan, of Converse, Texas, and Robert Menke of Ft. Worth, Texas; five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2000, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson, Nebraska, with Father Frank Machovec officiating. Music was provided by Debi Garrison, soloist, singing selections of "How Great Thou Art", "One Day At A Time", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Prayer of St. Francis" with Jim Spirk as organist and accompanist. Burial was in Nelson Cemetery. Casketbearers were Travis Billesbach, Paul Beavers, Scott Buresh, Lonnie Wheeland, Valdean Beavers, Kevin Wheeland and Paul Buresh. Honorary pallbearers were Marcia Buresh, Mary Wheeland, Jeff Wheeland, Virginia Elsey, Bob and Mildred Eilers, Jerome and Betty Mazour, Donna Boeka, Linda and Barry Williams, Bud and Veva Ferebee and Shawn Buresh.
