William’s father was primarily a coal miner and they lived much of their life in Schuylkill County. They came to What Cheer Iowa later in life. William began earning his own living by picking slate in a coal breaker at the age of seven, after that he attended night school. After holding different jobs in the mines when he reached twenty one years of age he came to Iowa in 1877. He worked in the mines at What Cheer and started little by little his photography business. On June 22, 1882 he married Mary Louise Gruber (Wilson)(d03/17/1871-10/12/1945) daughter of Jane Casey Gruber Lister and Lewis Gruber and step daughter to John Lister. Mary had a stepsister Annie Lister Burke. William and Mary had four boys William Gruber Bullers (b.10/2/1887-d.09/11/1959) and Perry Ferguson Bullers (b.12/24/1889-d.03/08/1954) were both born in What Cheer. John Lewis Bullers (b.11/2/1892d-d.2/2/1968) and Thomas Casey Bullers (b.01/21/1897- d.01/12/1979) were born in Oskaloosa. While in What cheer he was elected township clerk on the republican ticket and served four years. William and Mary and their two older sons moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa in 1893. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 507 in Oskaloosa. William continued with his photography business of portraits, store interiors and buildings until his death on October 12, 1914 at the age of 58 years 9 months and 11 days.
