Bomgardner Passes Away This community was caused to mourn Saturday morning, when the news came that Grandpa Bomgardner had passed away about eleven o'clock Thursday night, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Quigley, in this city. Mr. Bomgardner had been quite poorly for several months, but his condition had not been alarming until Sunday morning when he broke out with the smallpox, having contracted the disease fro his son-in-law, John Quigley, who had just recovered from that disease. Grandpa Bomgardener was about 92 years of age, and his poor health for the past few months had left him in a weakened condition, and his strength was not sufficient to fight this dreaded disease. After a six days battle, the physical body gave up the struggle and the spirit passed on to the other world. The deceased was a civil war veteran, having served his country during the greater part of the bloody war, and was always proud of the fact that he followed the old flag to victory. He fought for his country when his help was needed, and lived long to enjoy the fruits of that victory. He fought the battles of life for about 92 years, and passed on when the frail body, left weak by the passing years, could fight no more. Mr. Bomgardner was a beloved citizen, highly honored and respected by all who enjoyed his acquaintance. The passing of this good man brings sorrow to the hearts of loved ones and friends. William Bomgardner died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Quigley, January 27, 1928, at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 16 days. He was born in Summit County, Penn., May 11, 1836. When a boy moved with his parents to Indiana, then to Linn County, Iowa. He came to Greene County in 1869. He enlisted in the Civil war in 1861, in Company D. 12th Iowa. He leaves to mourn his death, three daughters, Mrs. John [Myrtle Elnora] Quigley, of Churdan; Mrs. Harry [Mary Maude] Shaffer, of Jefferson, and Mrs. James [Susan Eldora] Dorman, of Pond Creek, Oklahoma, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. The body was taken to the Scranton cemetery for burial Sunday afternoon. Short services were held at the grave, conducted by Rev. Wills, of Jefferson. The body was laid to rest beside the departed wife, who preceded him in death by many years. The Reporter joins with the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved daughters and other relatives. [Note: William was married twice, first to Mary Ann Nowels. They had two daughters: Mary Catherine "Katie" (Bomgardner) Hughes and Susan Eldora (Bomgardner) Dorman. After Mary's death around 1870, he remarried Lucia Brown.
