Burns came to the United States in 1903. He met Maggie May Frost and they were married on June 1, 1910. Burns worked at the Stowell MacGregor Mill in Dixfield, ME as a Tin Knocker which was slang for a sheet metal worker. He was also a volunteer fire fighter in the town of Dixfield, ME in the 1920's.
