The Beck youth whose skull was broken at 1 p.m. Saturday when the roadster in which he was riding came into collision with a sedan died at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday in St. Francis hospital after a 56 hour battle for life. Two Operations Performed Two operations had been performed on him in an effort to save him from the fate that claimed two of his companions in the car. Alan Wallace, who died instantly, and Joseph Rowland, who died at 9:40 p.m Saturday. The lad's strength and resistance astonished physicians who watched over him hour by hour and did all that was humanly possible to bring him back to life and health. He struggle so gamely for life that it seemed at times that it was almost possible for him to get well in spite of the five fractures of his skull. Flame Burns Low But late Tuesday afternoon the flame of life that had risen and fallen burned bright or dim thru the two days and more began to flicker more and more feebly. At the shade of evening fell, physicians began to admit defeat. As the rain pattered down out of a starless sky the spirit in the lad became weaker and weaker. Finally the tortured head would permit life no longer…. William Beck breathed deeply, gasped, choked and died. Parents, Sister Survive Surviving him are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Beck, 325 Western avenue and his sister, Dorothy a teacher at Niles, Mich. All were present at his bedside when he died. Billy Beck was born June 21, 1914 at Waterloo and attended Sacred Heart school until he entered West High as a freshman. Early this season he reported for football but his light weight was too much of a handicap and he gave the sport up. The Rosary society of Sacred heart church will meet for prayer at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Beck home.[Waterloo Daily Courier Nov 13, 1929] Mrs. Hannah Ramker received word this morning that her nephew, William Beck, 15, who was one of the auto crash victims at Waterloo Saturday had passed away during last night. Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Beck, parents of the boy, are well known to people here in Greene. Mrs Beck is a sister of Mrs. Ramker and Mr. Beck was at one time traveling salesman for the Fosselman Ice Cream Company of Waverly. They have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. [The Iowa Recorder, 11-13-1929] The James Mahoney family attended the funeral of Mrs. Mahoney's nephew, William Beck, in Waterloo Friday. Interment was in Waverly. William was one of the three boys who died from injuries sustained in an auto collision in Waterloo the week before. [Nashau Reporter, 11-20-1929]
