Message in music was by Mrs. Jo Mitchell, organist, Mrs. Kathryn Cox, accompanist, Rev. and Mrs. Gary DeGeest, duet and a Men’s Quartet, George Till, Jack Steinhoff, Dean Uncle and Gerald Beckstrom. Pallbearers were Wilfred Uhl, Francis “Bud” Welte, Jim McDonald, Calvin Servis, Clemence Claus, Harold Fowler. Military graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 666, Smithland, Iowa. Interment was in Little Sioux Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. William Carl Carlson, the son of Erick and Anna Johnson Carlson, was born April 9, 1896, near Castana, Iowa. He farmed and resided in the Castana, Mapleton, Anthon and Smithland areas until retiring and moving in Smithland in 1962. He was a veteran of World War I. Bill was married to Elsie Jhort on January 4, 1922, at Onawa. To this union, one daughter and two sons were born. He was a very devoted husband and father and was highly respected by all of his many neighbors and friends. He and his wife retired in 1962, moving into Smithland where he made his home until 1983 at which time he moved to Mapleton. He entered the Pleasant View Nursing Home in 1985. His wife preceded him in death on August 26, 1974. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Smithland. He was a member of the Leslie Seaton American Legion Post 666 of Smithland. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Max (Marjorie) Smith of Rodney, one sister, Mrs. Edna Hodges of Onawa; two brothers, Albin of Onawa and Alfred of Sioux City; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Violet Carlson of Smithland and Mrs. Barbara Carlson of Climbing Hill. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Emory and Rolland and three sisters. Mr. Carlson was laid to rest in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland this 25th day of August, 1986.
