Sept 21, 1944 - Carroll Times - William C. Baak, an employe of the Chicago & North Western Railway company for 32 years, died at his home here at 12:30 a.m. today at the age of 75 years. He had been ill for the past 2 months. Funeral services are to be held Saturday afternoon, with the Rev. A.O. Bleeke, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church, officiating. Short rites at 2 o'clock at the family home, 320 North Crawford street, will be followed by final services at the Lutheran church. Burial will be in the Carroll cemetery. The body is being returned at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Huffman Funeral home to the family residence, to rest there until the hour of the rites. Mr. Baak had lived in Carroll for 46 years. He was born Feb. 8, 1869, at Kiewe, Mackelburg, Schwerien, Germany, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Baak. Coming to the United States in 1882, he settled at Westside, Iowa. He was married at Denison Feb. 7, 1894, to Miss Minnie Schluter. Mr and Mrs Baak resided at Westside for 4 years before coming to Carroll in 1898. After farming for six years, Mr Baak took employment at Carroll Roller Mills where he worked for 12 years. He then entered the employ of the railway company. He had worked in the car repair department and also on the section before taking the post of flagman at the Main street crossing a number of years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Baak celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last February. Mr. Baak is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Henrietta Boje of Carroll, and two sons, Clarence Baak of Battle Creek, Mich., and Pfc. Milo Baak, who is with the armed forces in New Guinea. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Peter Rix of Manning and Mrs. Marie Anton of Waseca, MN and 5 grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church.
