Orville Eastman, owner of the cabin on highs Creek of the West Fork Valley of the Bitterroot, found the body. An attempt to find survivors is being made, Cain said. Ravalli Republic Tuesday, December 27, 1960 Page 1 Man Found Dead In Alta Cabin The body of William Chartier, 64, a former Anaconda miner who was found dead in a cabin near Alta about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, has been taken to Anaconda for funeral services. Orville Eastman, Deer Lodge, found the body. Chartier is believed to have been dead nearly three weeks. He was last seen in Darby Dec. 5. He died of natural causes and no inquest is planned. A pet dog was also found dead in the cabin, apparently having died of starvation. Eastman was a long-time friend of Chartier and they had worked together at Anaconda. Chartier was caretaker for Eastman's mining interests at Alta, Sheriff-Coroner Jack Cain said. Sheriff Cain took the county search and rescue unit up the little-used West Fork road to Alta Sunday morning. The body was returned to the Dowling funeral home. The Montana Standard Friday, December 30, 1960 Page 2 Chartier Services Held in Church Anaconda - The funeral of William Chartier, former Anacondan who was found dead Sunday in a cabin south of Hamilton, took place Thursday morning. The rev. Neil Chisholm celebrated requiem mass in St. Peter Church. the church choir sang the responses. Pallbearers were James Pearson, Donald Smith, Adolph Cecconi, James Corrigan, Richard Disney and Orville Eastman of Hamilton. The Finnegan Co. had charge of interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
