Was a farmer in Iowa, but later moved into Logan where he ran a general store. An ad in the April 2, 1891 Logan Observer by W.C. Longman lists starch, soda, maple syrup, stock food at bargain prices. He may have also been a teacher as a graduate of Oskaloosa College 1879. Will Longman was a lay leader in the Christian Church in Logan as shown by a newspaper announcement of a week of prayer sponsored by the Evangelical Alliance around the turn of the century. He is the only "Mr." listed among those conducting the services with the rest called "Rev." from the Methodist and Presbyterian churches. According to family lore, Will and Margaret moved all their children to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1902 so their children could attend Cotner College, a Christian school. Will died of appendicitis September 14, 1908 and was buried in Logan. About two years after William's death, from peritonitis, Margaret moved with all the children (except Clare and Fred) to Connecticut so Arthur could attend Yale Law School, Clay and Ed attended Yale Divinity School and Maurine married a Yale Divinity School graduate. Margaret later accompanied sons Clay and Arthur to Chicago where she died in 1920. Obituary William C. Longman was born July 28th, 1852 at Oregon Missouri and died at Lincoln Nebraska September 14th, 1908 age 56 years 1 month 16 days. With his parents he came to Harrison county Iowa in 1853 where he lived until 6 years ago when he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. He was married December 25th, 1874 to Margaret Owens to which union 7 children were born, 5 boys and 2 girls, all of whom are living excepting Annie who died in infancy. He leaves a wife, 6 children, a father, 2 brothers, a sister and a host of friends to mourn his loss. He has lived among you, a life that speaks in no uncertain tones for truth and righteousness. Funeral from Christian Church Thursday morning, Sept. 17, at 11 o'clock. Interment at Logan Cemetery. He was actually born in Missouri, while the family was en route from their immigration point in New Orleans to their eventual settlement in Iowa. His wife, "Maggie" is listed as 29 years old, perhaps an error as family records have her exact birthdate. Earnest C. Longman is listed as three years old, Alfred M. is listed as 6 months old. Obituary (Logan Gazette, Sept 17, 1908) William C. Longman was born in Missouri, July 28, 1852, and died at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska September 14, 1908, ages 56 years 1 month and 16 days. His death resulted from an operations for appendicitis. He is a son of A. Longman of this place. He was a resident of this place for nearly fifty years, having moved to Lincoln about six years ago, where his children could attend college. He was a devoted husband and an indulgent father; to his brothers and sisters a tender brother, and to his friends the soul of fellowship. But the greatest of all, he was a man. He believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. He believed that the man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellowmen who lets into the dark places of life the sunshine of human happiness and human sympathy is following in the footsteps of his Master. The remains were brought from Lincoln to Logan. The funeral was held from the Christian church of which he was a member, this forenoon at 11 o'clock conducted by Rev. Pritchard of Bethany, his home pastor. Interment was in the Logan cemetery. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, a father, A. Longman, two brothers, Henry, of Logan, and Alfred of Aurora, Nebr. (should be Missouri), one sister, Mrs. B.A. Divelbess, of near Logan, and six children -- E.C. of Logan, Fred of Prairie Home, Nebraska, Edward H. of Lincoln, Clay W. of Ashland, Oregon, Arthur and Miss Maurine of Lincoln. They have they sympathy of a large circle of friends.
