Description	:	William Coates Thornton was born in Staunton, Virginia and came to Carroll Co. in the 1840's as a tailor, living on what would become Rt. 58. In the late 1850's he opened the "Texas House" Hotel on Main Street and operated it until his death. The building burned in 1860, but was rebuilt and survived until the Hillsville fire of 1931 when it was destroyed. According to his death record, he died of flux.
