Description	:	William (Bill) Mitchell, was born at Fieldside, Cumbria, England. He was the eldest of seven Children. He had six sisters�Mary Plank, Ethel Muddle, Olive Plumb, Violet Marshall and Margaret Gudim�and one brother John who died in 1923. Dad grew up in the rural community of Hillanvale near Monitor, Alberta completing his schooling there. He then trained in Calgary at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology to be a mechanic, graduating top of his class. Read More	William (Bill) Mitchell, was born at Fieldside, Cumbria, England. He was the eldest of seven Children. Dad grew up in the rural community of Hillanvale near Monitor, Alberta completing his schooling there. He then trained in Calgary at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology to be a mechanic, graduating top of his class. He returned to Monitor and opened a John Deere and Ford Agency Garage in 1939. In June of 1941, Miss Ruth Gudim, who also grew up in the Monitor district, became Dad's bride and they settled down in Monitor. A year lat- er, Dad volunteered to join the Airforce and served in Calgary as a mechanic until June of 1945. After the birth of their first child, John (Jack), Mom and the baby moved to Calgary to be close to Dad. In June of 1945, Dad received his discharge and the family drove to Rimbey to visit his sister Ethel Muddle and her family. During his visit, he learned that the town of Rimbey was in need of a John Deere Dealer and he appled to John Deere. John Deere agreed on the condition that Dad have a building up and opened for business by October of that year. It was a very hectic four months but by using the material from the old Monitor Hardware Store, Dad made the deadline and his business was opened. The store was built in front of the existing house which still remains attached on the back. Mom and Jack joined Dad when the business was opened and moved into their new home behind the store. Ruth soon became indispensible to the business. Many a time Dad would call her from the back liv- ing quarters to help out when the store filled with customers. As she wrestled through the parts books, she soon became a pro and a true backbone of the business. She also handled all the accounting and ordering of parts. Bill took a great interest in community affairs. He served as a councillor on the Rimbey Town Council from 1949 to 1963 and acted as Mayor of Rimbey in 1951. He belonged to the Royal Canadi- an Legion, the Masonic Lodge and served on the Rimbey Fire Brigade for several years. He was an active member of the Rimbey Curling Club during the winter and in the summer he enjoyed horse- shoeing and picking saskatoons and blueberries.
