Turner, one of the prominent and early settlers of Taylor Township, was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, February 20, 1827, the fourth of eight children of Thomas and Mary Tucker, natives of Connecticut, who moved to North Carolina in early life. Turner, one of the prominent and early settlers of Taylor Township, was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, February 20, 1827, the fourth of eight children of Thomas and Mary Tucker, natives of Connecticut, who moved to North Carolina in early life. He remained with his parents until his marriage, in 1850, to Jemima E., eldest daughter of George and Mary Parsons. In the fall of 1855 he came to Iowa and settled in Appanoose County, on the farm where he now lives, on section 28, Taylor Township. He first purchased 120 acres, but to this has added until he now owns 320 acres of choice land. He has been an extensive stock-raiser and dealer, buying and shipping to the Chicago market. He came to Appanoose County with a team, and when he reached his destination had only $300. His land was a tract of unbroken prairie, but with characteristic energy he went bravely to work and now has one of the finest farms in the county. His large two-story frame residence and other farm buildings are models of convenience, and his other improvements are noticeably good. He has one of the largest apple orchards in the county, which contains some choice and well-selected varieties. In politics he was an old-line Whig, but now affiliates with the Republican party. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Turner, one of the most respected and most widely known among the people of Appanoose County, (Iowa) at the age of 77 years and 23 days, leaves us for the world beyond. Father Turner was born in Guilford County, North Carolina Feb 20, 1827 where, along the Blue Ridge Mountains, with his parents, he lived until he attained the age of 23, when in 1850 he was married to Miss Jamima E. Parsons. After their marriage they remained in North Carolina five years or until 1856 when they migrated westward to avail themselves of the great resources of the west, landing in Davis County Iowa, here they remained but one year when they moved to Appanoose County, near Moravia, where he became one of the principle factors working toward the development of his town and county. Mr. Turner invested in land in this county and by this means together with hard toil, careful management, and economy succeeded in accumulating a comfortable amount of property. On his farm, south of town he, with his family, resided until becoming feeble with age decided to retire from active toil and moved to town, Moravia, in 1900, living a quiet and happy life among us until, after a few months afflictions was called away, Monday at 12:20 P.M. March 14, 1904, at the good old age of 77 years and 23 days. To Father and Mother Turner were born 11 children. Mr. Turner was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, having united with that church in 1872. He believed in Christ, and so today his children also belong to the same church. Unlike most families of their size, all have remained in the same neighborhood with their families. All enjoyed going home within a very short time if occasion required. Mr. Turner bequeathed to his children elements of industry and good citizenship. As a result, almost every one of his children have comfortable homes and property of their own. They are some of the heaviest tax payers of our county. Almost all are Christians and of the best citizens, of which their father has ever been a worthy type. During the late sickness of Mr. Turner his sufferings were intense. No rest could be found in the long and sleepless hours of night or day. He often talked of soon going from earth where suffering would be at an end. He loved to sing nearer, My God to Thee and In the Sweet By and By, he would request of every one visiting him who could sing. At the conclusion of which he would often exclaim: Oh! Isnt that nice! Yes, nearer, my God to Thee, near to Thee, yes, I want to be nearer to God. He often spoke of the mountain scenery of his South, and the invigorating climate of the Blue Ridge. His mind was clear until the last. Realizing that his end was near, he welcomed the support of song and prayer, in which he took great delight. There remain of the surviving ones, the beloved companion of his life, ten children and twenty-four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services were conducted at Wesley Chapel by Revs. W. N. Roush and L. D. King. A large concourse of friends accompanied the remains to their earthly resting place.
