Bates died at his residence on Union, SC, Route 2, on Sunday, Dec. 23, 1956, at 11:50 p.m. following an illness of several years. Mr. Bates was born in Rutherford County, NC on Aug. 1, 1882, but had made his home here for the past 22 years. He was a member of the Westside Baptist Church for many years. Cooper, Sr of Anderson, SC and Mrs. Ben Foster of Marion, NC; two sons, John R. and the Rev. Coy R. Bates both of Union, SC; two sisters, Mrs. Odie Padgett of Cliffside, NC and Mrs. Welton Padgett of Spindale, NC; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
