Description	:	W. David Porter GEORGETOWN -- W. David Porter, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was born April 11, 1919, in the Oak Grove community of Georgetown County, a son of the late William and Blanche Mercer Porter. He grew up in the Oak Grove community and was a graduate of Andrews High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the S.C. Army National Guard with the rank of captain. David Porter, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was born April 11, 1919, in the Oak Grove community of Georgetown County, a son of the late William and Blanche Mercer Porter. He grew up in the Oak Grove community and was a graduate of Andrews High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the S.C. Army National Guard with the rank of captain. Mr. Porter was supervisor for roads and bridges for Georgetown County for many years and retired as manager of S.C. State Ports Authority in Georgetown. He was an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and was a former trustee and was chairman of the cemetery committee. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6444 and American Legion Post 114. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hicklin Porter; a daughter, Margaret Walker of Conway; four sisters, Kathryn Johnson, Juanita Gordon and Vera Johnson, all of Georgetown, and Arline Cribb of Pawleys Island; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight at Georgetown chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the churchyard. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church or the church cemetery fund, 283 Porter Road, Georgetown 29440.
