Description	:	William Decker was born April 23, 1823...the 8th and youngest child of Moses and Christina (Harness) Decker. He was raised on his parents' farm in Pike County that they established in the early 1830s. He went on to have 10 children of his own. In 1854, William married his neighbors daughter, Clarissa Whitten, who had lived with the Deckers for some time...possibly since the death of her mother which occurred between 1838 and 1943. Read More	William Decker was born April 23, 1823...the 8th and youngest child of Moses and Christina (Harness) Decker. He was raised on his parents' farm in Pike County that they established in the early 1830s. He went on to have 10 children of his own. In 1854, William married his neighbors daughter, Clarissa Whitten, who had lived with the Deckers for some time...possibly since the death of her mother which occurred between 1838 and 1943. Sometime between 1854 and 1860, William & Clarissa decided to head west with their family which consisted of them, William's elderly father (Moses) and two young children (Moses & Harrison). They stopped for a couple of years in Douglas County, Kansas where two more children were born. During this time, grandpa Moses either died or decided to return home to die, but family lore says he was buried with his wife, Christina, in George Cemetery (which no longer exists). Shortly after his father's passing, in May 1864, William & Clarissa set out again (despite Clarissa being pregnant again... about mid-term) with their sights set on getting to Montana. They navigated the Bozeman Trail, traveling through Virginia City and on to the Gallatin Valley, where Clarissa gave birth to their next child, Abner...the first white [male?] child born in the Gallatin Valley. William & Clarissa settled into the Gallatin Valley, having 5 more children after their arrival. The family was well known at the time and William is listed in "Progressive Men of Montana" published about 1910 and many other genealogical-type publications, like "Gallatin Pioneers, the first 50 years". After a long, hard, adventurous and somewhat dangerous lifestyle... William Decker...who obviously was a courageous and tough pioneer and also savvy business man, passed at the age of 77 in Gallatin County, Montana on August 11, 1900 of "congestion of the brain". He left a widow and 9 children to pass on his legacy.
