Description	:	William was a son of Ensign John Divoll and Hannah (nee White) Divoll, later Lummus. When a very young boy, he and his family were victims of the raid on Nashaway [Lancaster] 10 Feb 1675/6. This date was recorded in the old style calender, with the modern date being 22 Feb 1676. William was taken hostage, and later ransomed, with a safe return. Postscript to a letter which Sagamore Sam sent to Gov. (Henry Fitz-Gilbert), 1833-1913; New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1883, pages 198 & 199 William married Ruth Whitcomb, daughter of John Whitcomb, Jr. and his wife Mary. The Whitcombs were early settlers of Lancaster. Lancaster Birth Record: "Wm of Wm. & Hannah Divell. - 8.2.72" [note: 8.2.1672; or day.month.year; this was recorded before 1700 so it was using the old style calendar with the year beginning on Lady Day, where March was the 1st month and January was the 11th month of the year. The change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar was in 1752 with 11 days being dropped from the calendar. 12 days are added to the date if it is before Mar 1700, 11 days if subsequent to that day. William was ransomed in Portsmouth with his cousin Joseph, a son of Rev. Joseph and Mary (White) Rowlandson, their petition: "To the honored General Court now setting at Boston October ye 15th 1684, the humble petition of Onesiphorous Page of Salisbury, sheweth. that where as about the later end of the Late warr with the Indians several captives wear(sic) brought in at Maj. Waldron's & Mr. Peter coffins, among wch wear the sons of Mr. Rolenson & of the widow Divel: which 2 Captives your petisioner was sent to redeem by the widow Wells of Salsbury who was sister to Mr. Rolenson: & when your petisonr came there the Ransom of Mr. Rolenson's son was payd by the Gentlemen of the place, so yo' petioner had only to do with the other (to witt) the widow divels son: for whose Ransom yo' petione gave his bill of four pounds to Mr. Coffin & afterwards Mr. Rolenson moved the Counsell about it who wear pleased to undertake the paying of the sd four pound." source: "Genealogy of the descendants of John White of Wenham and Lancaster, Massachusetts. 1638-1909" by By Almira Larkin White (Haverhill, Mass ., 1900) V1:45-46 New England Marriages Prior to 1700 Clarence Almon Torrey "DIVOLL, William (1672 - 1731) & Ruth [WHITCOMB] (1672 - ); B 1695; Lancaster page 222 Probate Record from the Court Room in East Cambridge, marked "No. 24": "To the Honed James Russell esq Judge of pwlate &etc for the County of Middlesex: these may signifie that wee the subscribers have mutually agreed & concluded of a Devission of the Houseing and Land that formerly appertained to our Honed father John Whetcomb sumtime of Lancaster Deceased according as followeth. William Divoll husband to Ruth the eldest Daughter of ye said John Whetcomb and Sarah Whetcomb the youngest daughter do by these pesents firmly covenent, &etc. signed JONATHAN WHETCOMB, WILLIAM DIVOL, SARAH WHETCOMB. August 1698. Jno Whitcomb Inventory 1683 L105. S10, do. August 26 1689." Nourse "History of Lancaster..." page 174, and Nourse "Lancastriana. I...." page 28: "Feb. 15, 1714, a committee was chosen to apportion this land, forty acres of the best ground being allotted to each share." This is referring to the proprietors of the additional grant in Lancaster. William Divoll is listed as one of them.
