When he was 21 years of age he came to Nebraska, homesteading near Clay Center. He was married November 12, 1879 to Ida J. Elwood, who, just nine years and one week ago, preceded him to the heavenly home. This couple were the parents of three sons all living: Dr. J. Ray Shike of Lincoln; Dr. William E. of Gering; and Lee O., of Garenda, California. In 1901 the deceased moved with his family to Guthrie County, Iowa where he continued to farm until 1914; at which time they removed to University Place, Nebraska. Seven years ago he located on his farm at Baldwin City, Kansas, where he remained until his death, November 26, 1928. He was 76 years, five months, and nine days of age. Mr. Shike was always identified with every uplifting agency in his community - -social, political and religious. From early manhood he was a member of both church and lodge, being affiliated at the time of his death with the Mason Lodge and the Methodist Church of Baldwin City. His departure came unannounced by illness, and he slipped away very much as he would have wished to go --quietly and in action. Beside the three surviving sons and their families, he leaves one brother, H. O. Shike of Baldwin City, Kansas. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at the Edgar Cemetery at 3:30, Rev Johnson officiating.
