Description	:	William Nixon was the son of Foster Nixon and Susanna Jordan. His parents were natives of North Carolina and William was one of six children. William's father died in 1832 when William was 7 years old. After the death of his father he was adopted by his grandfather Nixon. His mother married Jehosaphat Morris and had one child; and married Levi Knight after the death of Jehosaphat. William's father and grandfather managed the Nixon Mills in Washington County, and William bought the mill after the death of his grandfather in 1844. He was forced to sell the... Read More	William Nixon was the son of Foster Nixon and Susanna Jordan. His parents were natives of North Carolina and William was one of six children. William's father died in 1832 when William was 7 years old. After the death of his father he was adopted by his grandfather Nixon. His mother married Jehosaphat Morris and had one child; and married Levi Knight after the death of Jehosaphat. William's father and grandfather managed the Nixon Mills in Washington County, and William bought the mill after the death of his grandfather in 1844. He was forced to sell the mill due to ill-health. On 17 Mar 1847 he married Nancy J Davis. Three weeks later they moved to Henry County, Iowa. When the Civil War began, William enlisted on 9 Oct 1861 at the age of 36. He mustered into Co K 4th Iowa Cavalry as First Corporal on 25 Nov 1861. He transferred to 2nd Invalid Corps at Keokuk on 28 Apr 1863 and spent many months sick in the hospital. William mustered out 5 Dec 1864 at Davenport when his term of enlistment expired. He returned home to Henry County and became a successful farmer. William and Nancy had five children: Margaret, who died at the age of 4 years, Sophia, Benjamin, Sarah Belle, and Enoch. William held many township offices and for many years was Justice of the Peace. His children at one time were all teachers in Henry County. William had one brother, Thomas, who also served in the Civil War and died at Helena, Arkansas. Nancy died in March 1895. William died six months at the age of 71 years.
