Fennell, Esq., senior, whose death was chronicled last week was one of our oldest and most respected settlers and many were the regrets expressed when the news went round that the good old man had gone to his rest. Mr. Fennell was born at Enniscorthy, Wexford County, Ireland, in 1817, and came to Canada, an orphan lad, at the age of 16. He lived in the vicinity of Smith's Falls in the county of Grenville, until 1860 when he removed to this township (Amaranth) and settled on Lot 12, 8th concession, on the banks of the Grand River at Bowling Green, whereby industry and economy he acquired a competence, and where on the 21st ult. he passed quietly away without a struggle, firm in the faith of Jesus as his Saviour. Mr. Fennell was married in 1843 to Elizabeth Hannah, of Wolford Township, and leaves a family of ten - five sons and five daughters - who, although well scattered over Ontario, were, with the exception of two, privileged to be with him in his last moments. He was one of the Loyal Volunteers of 1837 and a staunch Conservative. A large concourse followed his remains to the cemetery at Bowling Green wherewith the solemn ritual of the Church of England the body of the old pioneer was deposited in its resting place. The Revds. R. S. Radcliffe C.E., R. Hassard P.M., officiated, the former gentlemen delivering a sermon on the text, "What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch!" And the later offering up a most feeling prayer.
