The Post Office for the South Luther area was located in Peepabun (Concession 3, Lot 22), it was a little postal hamlet that saw its first settlers in the 1850s and came to life during the 1860s. Its extraordinary name is Ojibwe in origin and likely derived from the word "bidabun" which translates into "Dawn of Day." By 1852 a log school was built (Concession 3, Lot 18). It was also used for church services and a place to vote. This school was replaced in 1882 by a more substantial building down the road on Concession 2, Lot 18. For a time, there was a store across the road from the school. A cemetery was established in 1861 (Concession 3, Lot 21) on land from William Simpson, who was one of the first pioneers arriving in 1856. The first burial was that of an infant, three month old George Todd, grandson of George Todd, who later served as the first Reeve of Luther Township. The infant George was joined over the years by many other children whose lives were cut short. As a pioneer cemetery, still nestled peacefully in farmland, it tells stories of disease, hardships, community, and determination. Within a few years, the cemetery was followed by a church. The Luther Mission, which was part of the Presbyterian Church, was established in 1865. The one acre plot of land given by the Simpsons was large enough to accommodate the building of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in 1869. The cemetery, although attached to the church, was a community cemetery and remained non-denominational. A board made up of folks from the community maintained the grounds for many years. Peepabun never had much in the way of commercial services or businesses. It was primarily a rural farming area. In 1967 the church was closed due to redistribution of the charges. The church building was not as fortunate as the local school, it was demolished in 1867. The cemetery was used very little after 1920. In 1993, the Government of Ontario came out with new legislation concerning cemeteries. The board could no longer afford the insurance required. On September 1, 1993 the cemetery was transferred to East Luther Township. The last recorded burial took place in 1970, however the grounds continue to be well maintained.
