Peden, station agent on the C.P.R. at Chalk River, died last Saturday night, from consumption, on the 42nd year of his age. His death was erroneously announced in many of the Ottawa Valley papers a few weeks ago, and he had the melancholy privilege of reading some of the obituary notices. He was in very poor health at the time, but recovered sufficiently to visit a few of the newspaper offices in person and correct the statement. This time, however, the news is sadly true. Deceased was long a trusted official of the C.P.R., and filled the position of yardmaster at Carleton Place, and afterward at Chalk River, previous to being appointed agent at the latter place. He was a brother of Messrs Robert Peden, mail clerk, and A.G. Peden of the Canada Atlantic service. Deceased was a fine cricketer – on of the best in the district – and played many a game with the Almonte eleven. He was a member of Pembroke Lodge, I.O.O.F., as well as of the Masonic order and the order of Railway Conductors. The Oddfellows had charge of the funeral ceremonies, deceased having left a request to that effect. The C.P.R. Co generously supplied a private car and free transportation for relatives and members of societies wishing to attend the funeral, which took place to Almonte, thence to the Eighth Line cemetery, on Tuesday last. Some 50 Oddfellows came down from Pembroke, a dozen from Renfrew, as well as quite a number of Masons and railway men. The Almonte Oddfellows met them at the station, and led the way to the cemetery, the cortege being a very large one. The pallbearers were Messrs Harry King and Zeke Smith, representing the Oddfellows; Robert Russell and R.W. Kenning, representing the Masons; and P. Cadigan and A. Chapman, representing the Conductor's Association. The I.O.O.F. ceremonies at the grave were impressively conducted by Bros W. McNaughton and J.H. Walford. Mrs Peden is a daughter of Mr Allan Gilmour, sen, Ramsay, and has a family of four or five children. They have the genuine sympathy of a very large circle of friends in their severe bereavement.
