Household members: William (50-59), Anna (50-59), one male (under 5), Jesse and one male (5-9), Philip and two males (15-19), Sarah (15-19) and one female (20-29). Their son, Levi and family were living next door. If anyone can shed light on Jesse Fleming please contact me at [email protected] XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Originally there were three Fleming brothers who arrived from Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland c. 1751. They were William 1715-1792, Andrew 1717-1777 , and Thomas 1720-1783. They settled originally in Bethelhem, Hunterdon as did their mother Martha Bigger and her second husband James Bigger. Their older half-brother Samuel Fleming, the namesake of Flemington, was in NJ by 1746. Their father was Malcolm Fleming who was dead by 1720 according to a probate in index in Ireland (not 1730). Publicus V. Lawson wrote about them in the late 19th century and is a source of both information and misinformation. Samuel lived in what is now Flemington. William remained in Bethlehem. Thomas and Andrew eventually moved to Independence Township, Sussex Co. (now Warren Co.) Fortunately they all left wills. William had one son Andrew plus daughters. His Andrew died young leaving a son William plus daughters. This William remained in Bethlehem and can be traced there. He is buried near his grandfather and father. Thomas had sons Thomas (Revolutionary War veteran) and James and a daughter Margaret who married Andrew Van Wey/Whey. Andrew had a son John plus daughters. His John had three sons: Andrew, Thomas, and William who I believe is the William buried here. This William purchased land in Morris county near Parker in 1798 just over the line from Hunterdon. In Lawson’s genealogy he cites a deed from 1802/3 in which William and Thomas Jr. sell land that had belonged to their grandfather Andrew to Thomas Sr. People have been assuming that Thomas Sr. was the father of William and Thomas Jr. and the son of Andrew. This does not make sense. Sr. and Jr. did not mean father and son but rather older and younger. I think that Thomas Sr. was their cousin (once removed), the son of immigrant Thomas. This fits with everyone’s wills. Andrew left his property to his son John and John left the property to his sons Andrew, Thomas, and William. Andrew seems to have died, but Thomas and William sold the land to their cousin Thomas. There is no record that Andrew had a son Thomas although people say so because they misunderstand this deed. By this time William had moved to Morris Co. although he must have been born in Bethlehem, Hunterdon, and raised in Sussex Co. The 1793 militia census shows a William Fleming of military age in Morris county and one in Bethlehem who was clearly his second cousin. We know he married Anna Catherine Philhower whose family home was in Mountainville in Hunterdon (Philhowers still own the house) in 1789. So this William was, I think, the son of John Fleming who was the son of the immigrant Andrew Fleming, one of the “Bethlehem Flemings."
