The subject of this memoir was born in Decatur Co., Ind., Aug. 1, 1876 the son of Sanford H. and Electa Biddinger, and was the eldest of eight children of which three preceded him to the other world. Fletcher was a typical Kansan, sturdy, ambitious, progressive; making good the trust imposed to him. From old neighbors and new friends you hear - "he was a model young man, of unquestionable honesty and above the faintest suspicion." He is what you might rightly call a self-made man; compelled to labor, he early became acquainted with hard work which aided in the development of his sturdy character. In his father's home he was the ideal son and brother, and he had their fullest confidence and love, and they had learned to lean upon him when the burdens came. He secured a good practical education, it can be truly said of him, that he studied both men and books, and from each, learned how to live among men. He taught several terms in the country districts, was principal of the Elk Falls school, and two years ago was elected County Superintendent of Public instruction, and has made good in this the more exalted, as he did in the more modest fields which he has filled. He was preparing himself for still higher duties and his future was bright when the call came. About seven years ago he was converted and united with the United Brethren church at Fairview where his membership has remained. His life was a continual testimony of the Christ whom he loved. His nature was retiring, even timid, easily embarrassed by publicity, he kept himself in the background and though filled with laudable ambitions, it was the hardest struggle of his life to assume the duties which his public office and position made imcumbent on him. His Fraternity associations were of the Masons, the Odd Fellows, and the Modern Woodmen. The funeral services were held at Fairview, Wednesday at 11 a.m., Rev. Geo. E. Tift, conducting them, assisted by Revs. Haftner and Brilhart. The Hope Lodge No. 155, A.F.& M. had charge of the burial. "Oh man of simple, steadfast faith, Go to they rest: They heart was true to self and God, Now thou art blest. His sympathies were broad and deep For all the race: No love of caste, or pride of life In him found place. Oh, soul, no longer bound to earth, In triumph sing. Oh, grave where is thy victory? Where, death, thy sting!" As a mark of respect to the memory of Fletcher Biddinger, County Superintendent, all the schools in the county adjourned Wednesday, the day of his funeral. The teachers from all parts of the county were in attendance at the funeral services, and showed by their presence the high esteem in which he was held. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield)
