He came to Nebraska with his parents, James Marion and Sarah Malinda hays, and his five sisters and three brothers, October 21, 1878. They settled on a farm two miles east of Edgar, staying there for two years. Then they moved to the farm five miles southwest of Edgar, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Adelia DeLong, November 25, 1903. Two daughters were born to this union, Anita Gwendolyn, who preceded him in death and Mary Evalyn, now Mrs. Don Thornton of Ohiowa, Neb. Mr. Hays was baptized and joined the United Brethren Church in 1906. In 1911 Mr. Hays and his family moved to Edgar, where he lived until his home was broken up by the death of his wife in 1937, after which time he resided in Ohiowa until the time of his death, July 10, 1942, at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 11 days. Three sisters, one brother, one daughter and his wife preceded him in death. There remain to mourn his departure, one daughter, Mrs. Don Thornton of Ohiowa; three grandchildren, Jane, Jeanette and Sandra Thornton; two sisters, Miss Iva hays of Edgar and Mrs. C. R. Broderick of St. Joseph, Mo.; two brothers, Same of Edgar and Lee of Grand Island and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday, July 12, at 2 o'clock from the Donald Thornton home, Rev. S. G. Rasmussen of DeWitt officiating. Mr. Rasmussen was Methodist pastor at Ohiowa and Edgar when Mr. Hays lived in those communities. the local Methodist pastor, Rev. A. W. Ahrendts, read Isaiah 26, a selected Bible chapter of the deceased, when ill. The sermon by Rev. Mr. Rasmusson dwelt on certain passages of this scripture, and upon statements of this deceased friend. Mrs. Wayne Hunter sat with her sister, Miss Wilma Merrill, at the piano. Both are from Edgar. Mrs. F. S. Zuver and Mrs. Lester Goodman had charge of the floral arrangment. Guest host was Mrs. Mervil Elward. Clyde Gewacke, Bryice and Don Luttrich, Walter Wood, Mervil Elward and Floyd Zuver were casket bearers. Burial was at the Edgar Cemetery where a goodly number of former home friends gathered to pay their respects. The service at the grave was brief. Dinner was served at the F. S. Zuver home by Circle No. 4 of the Woman's Society of Christian Service to all relatives gathered for the funeral and at 6 o'clock the Eastern Star served lunch at the Don Thornton home.
