Howell, 86, formerly of 1947 Gladstone, died at 11:15 p.m. Feb. 19, 2007, at Good Samaritan Nursing and Rehab Center surrounded by his family. He was born April 10, 1920 in Davis County, Iowa to William Thomas and Lela White Howell. He married Willa Mae Hufford Jan. 9, 1943. A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, he served in the Army during World War II. He worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works for 34 years, retiring as supervisor in 1984. He was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church, Good Sams, and was an avid golfer, having 11 documented holes in one. He also enjoyed playing cards with his buddies and wintering in Arizona. Surviving is his wife, Willa Mae; six daughters, Sharon Lorton (Harlow Wilcox) of Drakesville, Connie (Jack) Crowder of Fremont, Dana (Jim) Parrish, Debbie (Short) Overturf and Patty (Randy) Monohon all of Ottumwa, Pam (Dennis) Harness of Cottage Grove, Minn.; a son, Randy Howell of Fairfield; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob Howell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Sue Wilson of Omaha, Neb. and Shirley Aeschliman of Texas. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry William Howell; two sisters, Mary Kirk and Linda Lou Martin. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Willard St. United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Luers officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Larry Lorton, Lonnie Lorton, Jason Parrish, Jason Overturf, Joe Harness, Travis Monohon and Brad Monohon. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Emry, Wayne Counterman, Butch Jones, Boyd Caster, Arlo Northup, Don Black, and Charlie Barnett. Memorials have been established to Willard St. United Methodist Church and Hospice, 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
