Henry, has 2 other sons (Walter and Harry) from his first wife, Mary E Spencer, who passed away in 1892. They are living with 2 of Mary's sisters. Ada, also had a daughter (Nellie) before marrying Henry. She is being raised by Ada's parents. Walter, Harry and Nellie would be half siblings of Fred. Henry is listed as 44, been married twice, currently for 15 years, born in IN, and both parents in Ohio, and is a farmer. Ada is listed as 38, married once for 15 years, had 5 children, all of which are living, born in IN, father born in NC, mother in IN. Their 5 children living with them are Fred age 14, George age 12, Hazel age 9, Sharon (son) age 7, and Edith age 4, all born in IN. On June 5, 1917, William Fred Bell completed a registration card for the service in Wayne Co MI. Fred was age 21, born April 8, 1896 in Madison IN, single, residing at 26 Henry, River Range, MI. He is tall, slender build, blue eyes and has brown hair. In the 1920 Census taken of the U.S.S. Oriole stationed out of San Diego CA and taken on January 28, William F Bell Eng. 2.C. from Alexandria IN is age 23 and single. He and his parents were born in IN. Fred is an engineman on the ship. The USS Oriole (AM 7) was commissioned on November 5, 1918 in the US Navy as a Minesweeper Lapwing class after being built by Staten Island Shipbuilding Co from March 6, 1918 to July 3, 1918. The vessel had 840 tons of displacement, was 187'10" in length, beam of 35'5" and 15' of draft. It as armed with 2 3"/50 and complement 75, had 14 knots speed and operated with a reciprocating engine. It was assigned to the Pacific Fleet in the 14th District and patrolled and step the coastal waters outside Pearl Harbor for its first 4 years. She was decommissioned at Pearl Harbor May 3, 1922. In 1938, it was commissioned again and operated for 3 years out of Puget Sound, Bremerton WA along the upper west coast. She operated through WWII until being decommissioned on February 6, 1946. No 1930 Census record has been located. In the 1940 Census WA Kitsap Co Waterman on Beach Rd take April 26, William F Bell age 43 is living with his wife Beverly C age 34 and son Gerard E age 4. Fred is listed as born in IN, Beverly in Idaho and Gerard in WA. Fred is working as an electric craneman in the Navy yard. In 1942, William Fredrick Bell, serial number U952, residing at Route No. 1 Box 156A Port Orchard Kitsap WA, age 46, born April 8, 1896 in Alexandria IN registers for service again. He lists his place of employment by the US Govt at the Navy yard in Bremerton WA, Kitsap Co. He also lists Mrs Harry Hannon (which is his sister Hazel Bell-Hannon) at 2321 Kenwood Ave, Indianapolis IN as his contact. He was born April 8, 1896 in Indiana. MILITARY RECORD: Enlisted 23 Nov 1917 in Indianapolis, Indiana in the U. S. Navy. Discharged 3 Sep 1919 at Recruiting Station, New York, New York. Re-enlisted 23 Jun 1921 in San Francisco, California in the U. S. Navy. Discharged 22 Jun 1925 at Naval Air Station, San Diego, California. He served 7 years, 6 months and 29 days. He received a veteran's pension of $1,400 annually, as well as a civil service pension. A resident of the state of Washington since June 1925, he had resided in the towns of Seattle, Port Orchard, Waterman, Bremerton and Silverdale. As Fred William Bell of Pierce County, Washington, he married Beverly C. Crawford on June 23, 1934. They were the parents of a son, Gerard E. Bell. Mr. Bell requested admission to the Washington Veterans Home alone. His wife would be caring for their minor son at their home in Silverdale. He was accepted for admission on March 10, 1952. He died aged 73 years at the Home Hospital on January 16, 1970. He was cremated and a memorial service was held on January 26. He was buried at the home cemetery. He was survived by his wife, Beverly Bell of Seattle and siblings Hazel Hennon of Sunnyville, California; Edith (Mrs. Virgil) Dickerson of Summitville, Indiana; Mr. Sharon S. Bell; and Mrs. Helen Ellingwood of Anderson, Indiana.
