Gewacke, son of Christ and Wilhelmine Gewacke, was born January 28, 1871, near Beecher, in Will county, Illinois. He died at the Fillmore hospital in Geneva, Neb., Sunday, June 28, 1942, aged 71 years and 5 months. His mother dying when he was a small child, he came with his father, step-mother and brother Fred, to Nebraska in the fall of 1875 to live on a farm in the southeastern part of Fillmore county. A few years later he moved with his parents to western Kansas, from where after a few years, he returned to Fillmore county, Nebraska, where he lived the remainder of his life. March 25, 1902, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Wernimont of Ohiowa, Neb. To this union were born two children, Clyde of Ohiowa, Neb., and John of Geneva, Neb., now in Army service. Early in boyhood he was confirmed in the Lutheran church. Later on, August 3, 1902, he united with the Methodist church at Ohiowa, with which he continued to serve throughout life. He loved the out-of-doors and spent his entire life on the farm, devoting his time and energy to it until his final illness began in April of this year. He is survived by his beloved wife, two sons, two grandchildren, one brother, Fred; three half-brothers, Joe, Ernest and Henry; two half-sisters, Mrs. Sophia Pepple and Mrs. Lizzie Dearking, and many other relatives and friends. Mr. Gewacke assumed many responsibilities in the church. When a man was needed for a job, Mr. Gewacke was generally the choice of the church board or the ladies aid. His dependability and integrity perhaps over demanded his service, but he fulfilled his labors in an ever ready and uncomplaining manner. The present official board has always known Mr. Gewacke as a part of it, serving as chairman, steward, trustee, and assuming committee work during these years. Methodist folks feel they have lost a good churchman for he was always in favor of the things that he felt would benefit the church. His demise leaves a great vacancy. His many kind and generous deeds benefited the church officers who feel the loss, but have a beautiful memory of his life. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, July 1, at 2:30 o’clock from the Ohiowa Methodist church, with Rev. A. W. Ahrendts officiating, and Mrs. F. S. Zuver and Mrs. I. C. Steele rendering the songs. “Thy Brother Shall Rise Again” was the sermon theme, St. John 11:23. The songs were “Rock of Ages,” “Lead Kindly Light” and “Jesus Savior, Pilot Me.” Casket bearers were Ed Luttich, Norman Wright, Maddes Swanson, John Matejka, Fred Eppler and Henry Peppie. The many beautiful floral offerings in the charge of James Barbur, florist of Geneva, Mrs. Norman Wright, and Mrs. Maddes Swanson, bore silent tribute to this esteemed man. Burial was in the Geneva cemetery. The funeral service was carried out as planned by the deceased. Among those from a distance here for the funeral were Mrs. Rose Wernimont and Miss Dorothy Knight of Lincoln, Floyd Pumphrey of Lyman, Glen Pumphrey of Shickley, and several from Geneva.
