Description	:	OTTUMWA--William "Bill" G. Denniston Jr., of Ottumwa, passed away in his sleep on August 21, 2014, at the age of 79. Bill was born on January 14, 1935, in Ottumwa to William G. and Violet Pearl Toops Denniston Sr. Bill grew up and attended school in Ottumwa but dropped out to join the Navy at 17. During his time in the Navy his ship visited many ports in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia and participated in naval actions during the Korean War. Denniston Jr., of Ottumwa, passed away in his sleep on August 21, 2014, at the age of 79. Bill was born on January 14, 1935, in Ottumwa to William G. and Violet Pearl Toops Denniston Sr. Bill grew up and attended school in Ottumwa but dropped out to join the Navy at 17. During his time in the Navy his ship visited many ports in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia and participated in naval actions during the Korean War. Bill married Anita "Jo" Joeline Songer on December 29, 1955. He left the Navy after one tour and briefly worked at John Morrell and Co. in Ottumwa. Bill re-enlisted , this time in the Air Force in 1957. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed in Arizona, California, Texas, England and Vietnam. When he retired fron the military in 1974, Bill had served his country for nearly 23 years and seen much of the world. After leaving the service, Bill moved back to Ottumwa. He attended Indian Hills Community College and obtained a certificate in diesel mechanics in 1977. Bill worked the rest of his life as a mechanic for a variety of businesses. For the last 10 years, he has repaired small engines from home. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jo; two children, Diana (Les) Leonard and Mike Denniston; a grandaughter, Elizabeth Denniston; three brothers, John, Richard and Jim; three sisters, Hazel, Judi and Michelle. He was preceded in death by his parents and a infant son. His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Hospice serving Wapello and Davis Counties at 927 Pennsylvania Ave. Ottumwa, Iowa 52501. Obit from Ottumwa Courier Saturday August 23, 2014
