Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of LeMars was in charge of the arrangements. William George Hamann was born on May 10, 1919, west of Merrill, Iowa, in Liberty Township. He was the son of Emil and Therese (Doering) Hamann. He received his education at Liberty Consolidated School. On September 27, 1940, Bill and Mildred Hammatt were united in marriage at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Johnson Township. The couple made their home in LeMars. Bill enlisted in the United States Army in January of 1942. He served with the Army Division 546 Standing Aircraft as a Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945. Bill was employed with the LeMars Community School District for 26 years as the Director of Building and Grounds. During his retirement years he was a member of Mission Builders. From 1987 to 1994 Bill helped to build churches in Belgrade, Montana; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Gehring, Nebraska; Indianapolis, Indiana; Dalbo, Minnesota; and Wichita, Kansas. Bill was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in LeMars and participated in Tuesday Morning Bible Study. He was also a member of the Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion, WWII Last Man's Club and the Sportsman Club in LeMars. Bill enjoyed playing Pinochle, fishing, gardening, carpentry, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his children, Glen Hamann and his wife, Phyllis of LeMars; Gayle Maney of Anthony, Florida; Lynn Hamann and his wife, Carlene of Danbury; Joyce Eldridge of Portales, New Mexico; Carol Taylor and her husband, Dennis of LeMars; and Tamie Schmidt and her husband, Brent of Amarillo, Texas. He will be in the hearts of his 15 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; a sister, Viola Braakman and her husband, Fred of Green Valley, Minnesota; a brother, Duane Hamann and his wife, Donna of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law, Jolene Hamann of LeMars and Maxine Bystorm of Lincoln, Nebraska; special family friends Barb and Gerry Brock; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents; his wife, Mildred who died on December 3, 1988; a daughter, Judy; a brother Fred "Fritz" Hamann; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Utesch and her husband, Art.
