August 20, 1925 - Carroll Times - W.G. Tregloan, the last charter member of the Jeff Davis post, U.S.V., died at his home on North Court street last Friday afternoon. Mr. Tregloan had been ailing for several months, and though he was bedfast a large part of the time during these months, he refused to admit defeat and would get out and do odd jobs around the house and yard. Death was due to a complication of ailments, incident to advancing age. Monday the Carroll flag was flown at half staff until after the burial of the veteran. William Goldsworthy Tregloan was born in Cornwall, England, December 11, 1840, and passed away at his home on Friday, August 14, at the age of 84 years, 4 months, and a few days. When about the age of 10 years he was brought by his parents to the United States, and the family settled in Hazel Green, Wis. In this place he received his education and grew to manhood, and in 1869 was married to Miss Sarah Williams of the same locality. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive: L.L. Tregloan, of Fargo, N.D.; Mrs. R.R. Rogers of Rouleau, Sask., Canada; N.C. Tregloan, of Wrentham, Alberta, Canada; J.P. Tregloan, of Wrentham, Canada; Mrs. F.W. Watts, of Melstone, Mont.; and W.W. Tregloan of Carroll, Ia. The mother of these children passed away in June of 1905 and in later years Mr. Tregloan was again married, this time to Miss Grace Baskerville of Carroll, who survives him. In August of 1861 Mr. Tregloan enlisted in the defense of the Union in the First Missouri cavalry, and for three years he served in Missouri and Kansas. He participated in the battles of Pea Ridge and Springfield and took part in the pursuit after General Price, and the battles attending that pursuit. His regiment did good scouting duty, and took part in many severe battles and skirmishes and distinguished themselves by capturing the rebel General Jeff Thompson. After the expiration of his term of service he returned home and in the spring of 1865 he enlisted in the 7th Illinois cavalry and was appointed as a corporal. His entire service extended over a period of four years and although never wounded as a result of exposure and hardship his health became seriously impaired. In 1869 he came to Iowa and purchased a farm in Carroll county and in 1872 moved his family here, making his home near here ever since and for a number of years in the residence on North Court street where his death occurred. Until rather recently Mr. Tregloan was remarkable for the preservation of his manly strength and alertness. Even to the last day or two his mind retained its keenness and brightness. He joined the M.E. church when a young man and throughout all thes years has been a faithful member. He was much interested in church affairs in his home life and in his patriotism, being the last member of the charter Davis post. The funeral afternoon at 3 o'clock at the M.E. church after a short service at the home in charge of Rev. E.M. Handy. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and the many friends of the deceased. Clyde Bayliss, Walter Otto, Louis Shoemaker, Jr., and Rev. Handy composed the quartet that rendered music during the church services and burial was made in the Carroll cemetery.
