He was the sixth of eleven children, and this family gradually moved southward from the edge of the Highlands to Monikie and Tealing, in Angus, just a little north of Dundee. He was the sixth of eleven children, and this family gradually moved southward from the edge of the Highlands to Monikie and Tealing, in Angus, just a little north of Dundee. William's mother died at age 65 in 1863 in Tealing, and his father was gored to death by a bull in a byre, July 31, 1867. William married Anna Robb in May of 1852 and they immigrated to the United States along with two of William's brothers, their wives and Anna's younger sister, arriving August 2, 1852 in New York. They traveled, probably by train, to LaSalle County, Illinois, where their first two children were born. William and his brother Thomas bought adjoining farms in Berlin and Olive Townships of Clinton County, and two other brothers farmed in a nearby township. Eight more children were born in Clinton County, including three who died as children. William and Anna later moved to Story County and settled on a farm near Ontario. For a number of years he was connected with the college at Ames as veterinary surgeon. For several years they resided in Boone, but after the death of his wife he made his home with his children. William died in Fort Dodge, IA on January 14, 1910 at the home of his sister, Mrs. William MacVicker. He was buried in East Linwood Cemetery in Boone, IA beside his wife who passed away in December of 1908. William was survived by six children: Mrs. Fay McConover of Ames, J.R. McNaughton of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Nettie Canady of Panora, Mrs. Mary Peterson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, W.A. McNaughton of Cedar Rapids, and F.E. McNaughton of Nebraska.
