Ill., October 21, 1868. He died at Phoenix, Ariz., December 29, 1943. He died at Phoenix, Ariz., December 29, 1943. The father, mother and family, including the deceased, emigrated from Illinois to Nebraska when Mr. McFarland was sixteen years of age. The family settled at Hubbell in Thayer county. He lived in and around Hubbell until he was twenty-four years of age, at which time he married Nellie Jane Brock and shortly thereafter moved to Lincoln, Neb. From the time of his marriage in 1892 he was engaged in the United States postal railway mail service until 1909, when he and his family came to Tobias, Neb. At Tobias he owned and operated a flour mill. In 1906 his wife died. To this union three children were born, all of whom survive. They are Robert M. McFarland and Paul McFarland, sons, and Ellen M. Weiss, a daughter. The sons now live at Phoenix, and the daughter, the wife of W.H. Weiss, resides at Ohiowa, Neb. Following the passing of his wife, Mr. McFarland entered the general mercantile business with his late brother, E. W. McFarland, at St. Edward, Neb. In 1908 the McFarland Brothers established a store at Ohiowa, which they successfully operated for seventeen years. Since 1925 Mr. McFarland has lived at Phoenix, Ariz., owning and operating a tourist’s camp. During his life he was a prominent citizen of the Ohiowa community. He was honored with various offices by his fellow citizens. In addition to his children he is survived by four grandsons residing at Phoenix, Ariz. The body was brought to Ohiowa for burial. Services were held at the Methodist church at 2 o’clock Sunday, January 2, 1944. Rev. H. J. Diekhoff, pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran church, officiated. Members of the Masonic order and order of the Eastern Star, of which the deceased was a member, took part in the services. Interment was in the Ohiowa cemetery. W. A. Philippi service.
