Son of John Yeton Butterfield, an American, and Francis Maria DeMerchant a British Subject and daughter of an United Empire Loyalist. Moved to the United States circa 1848-49 shortly after the matriarch of the DeMerchant family passed away. Joined the "Union" side on Sept 17, 1862 - 7th Regiment, Maine Infantry, Company B.
