The appearance of the body when recovered showed that he had probably taken with cramps and being in deep water was unable to get out without assistance. The man who accompanied him was unable to swim and had gone down the river where the water was shallow and knew nothing of the incident. He came up the river where Mr. Hoffman had gone into the water and seeing nothing of him supposed that he had gone home and he also returned to the house which was only a short distance. He asked Mrs. Hoffman for Will and was told that the hadn't been there. Mrs. Hoffman ran over to her father's, Mr. H. Hagerman, who lived nearby to see if he had been there and found that he had not and all went back to the river and found his clothes lying on the bank. The news was spread among the neighbors and a search was instituted for the body and it was finally found about four o'clock in the evening by Joe Adams, who was assisted by Art Hicks and F. H. French in getting the body out of the water. The coroner was notified and came on the evening train and an inquest was held and the jury found a verdict of accidental drowning. The case is a sad on and the young wife and mother has the sympathy of the entire community in her great affliction. The funeral services were held at the home yesterday and the internment took place in the Spragueville cemetery. The only child of William and Louisa was George Hoffman who was just a few months old at the time of the drowning. His mother was Lena Meyer of St Donatus, Iowa. His father was Frederick Hoffman of Jefferson City, Missouri. Fred is not mentioned after 1885 and Lena remarried in 1886, so he is presumed to have died. No record of the death has been found so far, nor has any grave been identified. If anyone has the knowledge, please leave a message.
