Description	:	W H Showalter who was one of the leading citizens of that community passed away at his home near Carnforth after a brief illness. He was mercifully spared a long time of suffering and passed away suddenly after a partial recovery from a short illness at the age of 73 years 18 month and 2 days. Funeral services were conducted in Carnforth church by Rev Wm Maxwell. A large congregateion of neighbors and friends gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. Interment in the Victor (IOOF) Memorial Cemetery, Victor, Iowa. William H Showalter was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, his parents being Michael and Millie Spicer Showalter. His father who was a farmer was of German descent while his mother came of English ancestry and belonged to one of the first families of Virginia. He remained at home until he reached the age of 16 years and then entered the army in defense of his beloved southland. He remained at the front for 2 years and took part in the battles of Gettysburg, Brandy Station, The Wildernedd and other conflicts. During one of these engagements he was severly injured by a fall from his horse. After the surrender of Lee he spent some years at home, in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado where for 3 years he rode the range. He came to Poweshiek County in 1878 settling in Carnforth where he resided for over forty years. He was recognized as one of the most successful farmers in the community. On September 20, 1879 he married Mrs Emma Ratcliffe Ringler to whose two boys he was a good father. Mr Showalter was a home-loving man, a keen man in business and one who attended strictly to his own affairs.
