Bradshaw, prominent Crisfield, resident and former Mayor of this city, passed away Tuesday morning at the home of a son, Henry L. Bradshaw, in Marion Station. Bradshaw, Ex-Mayor, Died Tuesday Mr. William H. Bradshaw, prominent Crisfield, resident and former Mayor of this city, passed away Tuesday morning at the home of a son, Henry L. Bradshaw, in Marion Station. He was 87 years of age and had been in ill health for several months. Mr. Bradshaw was a native of Ewell, Smith Island, and resided there until 1920, when he came to Crisfield and with his late brother-in-law, David F. Sneade, and founded the Bradshaw and Sneade Hardware Co. When Mr. Sneade retired in 1948, the business became the Bradshaw Hardware Co. Mr. Bradshaw remained active in the business until becoming ill, and up until his death he was a consultant in the company, now operated by another son, William Robert Bradshaw. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron B. Bradshaw of Ewell. He was Mayor of Crisfield from 1932 to 1940, was director of the Marine Bank of Crisfield for many years, a member of Immanuel Methodist Church, and a member of the class of 1896 of Goldey School of Business in Wilmington, Del., now Goldey Beacon Business College. Surviving, in addition to his two sons, are his wife, Mrs. Edith Marsh Bradshaw; three brothers, John A. Bradshaw, of Crisfield, Calvin T. Bradshaw of Ewell, and Aaron B. Bradshaw of Onancock, Va., one sister, Mrs. Cassie Evans of Ewell; and a granddaughter. Funeral services were held yesterday, Thursday, at 2:00 p.m. from the Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. George H. Moore, pastor of Immanuel Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park. The Crisfield Times, Crisfield, Maryland, Friday, February 12, 1965, p. 1 ______________ A feature story about William H. Bradshaw appeared in the Crisfield Times, Friday, May 26, 1978, p. 4, "Lest We Forget" by Woodrow T. Wilson: "For many years Crisfield's hardware store, Bradshaw and Sneade, was almost a local institution. The owners, William H. Bradshaw and David F. Sneade, had such a fine reputation for service, honesty, and helpfulness that the public knew that items purchased there were of fine quality and fair priced. The owners were also the clerks and operators who were on hand daily to assure that such fair play was strictly adhered to. In this manner the business developed into one of the largest of its kind on the Eastern Shore. Both owners were great benefactors of Crisfield. William H. Bradshaw William (Will) Bradshaw (1878-1965) was born on Smith Island, the son of Aaron and Laura Tyler Bradshaw. He was a member of the Class of 1896 of Goldey School of Business. On December 3, 1903 he married Edith Marsh (1886-1972) daughter of Edward and Nellie Crockett Marsh of Onancock, Va. William and Edith had two sons, the eldest being Robert (1906-1970), who married Stella Conner of William and Ida Forsythe Conner. The second was Henry, who married Anna Rose Whittington of Austin, Sr. and Rose Tyler Whittington. Will Bradshaw's sister, Mary (1885-1964), married David F. Sneade who became Will's partner for many years. Will and David left Smith Island on or about 1920 and came to Crisfield where they purchased the hardware business of W. Jerome Sterling. They changed the name to Bradshaw and Sneade Hardware Company. Will Bradshaw was active in all civic affairs. He was Mayor of Crisfield for four terms the same as for our present Mayor John S. Catlin. However, during Mayor Bradshaw's time the term for Mayor was two years as compared to Mayor Catlin's four year terms. It was during Mayor Bradshaw's tenure as Mayor (1930-1938) that the city received its first sewer system; the water system was modernized; streets were resurfaced and many other lasting improvements were made. He did not run for re-election in 1938 but relinquished the office to William E. Ward who served three succeeding terms. Mr. Sneade retired from the Bradshaw and Sneade business in 1948 after which the business became Bradshaw Hardware Co.; however, Will Bradshaw remained active in its operation and management almost until his death in 1965. After that it was operated by his sons, Robert and Henry. A few years later Henry sold his interest to Robert. After Robert's death in 1970 the business was operated by his widow, Stella, for a few years and then sold to the Tawes Brothers who still operate it at the same location and under the former trade name of Bradshaw Hardware Co." __________ Note: In this plot are the graves of Mayor William H.
