He was married to Emily Rhoda Poulton, December 3, 1885. She preceded him in death July, 194. There came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gearhart, three children. They are Carl Harrison, who passed away in 1943, Mrs. Gladys LaVeta Lefler and Maurice William, who survive. There are five grandchildren--Gerald Gearhart Lefler, Dale LeRoy Lefler, Patricia May Gearhart, Cheri Camille Gearhart and William Carl Gearhart; also two great-grandchildren, Gerald Gearhart Lefler, Jr., and John Michael Lefler. Mr. Gearhart came from a family of seven children--five boys and two girls. Two sisters, Anamaria and Sarah Elizabeth, also one brother, David have passed away. John, Cyrus, Oliver and Fred are still living in Pennsylvania. There parents, Mary Anne Snyder and Cyrus Gearhart, passed away many years ago in that state. Mr. Gearhart moved from the state of his birth to Winnebago, Ill., and from there came with Mrs. Gearhart to Fairmont, in 1888. He was a blacksmith by trade, and followed that profession for a number of years. In later years, he was a salesman. He was a man who felt that he owed a service to his community and for two terms served Fairmont as its mayor. It was during his time in office that the paving in the city was done. He spent many hours on the street at the time the paving was being put in, to see that the city was getting the value for the dollars that were being spent. He was a trusted public servant. Mr. Gearhart, however, had time for something other than the tangible things of life. He was a great churchman and up until ten years ago when his health failed, he was an active member of the church. He united with the Presbyterian church of Fairmont in 1896, and when the Congregational and Presbyterian churches merged into a Federation, he was one of the active supporters of the merger. He was elected many times to responsible positions in the church, which he filled with honor and dignity. What he had to do in this world was done well, but knowing that life here was short, he was concerned in the life that was to come. So while here, he prepared himself for his eternal home to which he has gone. His earthly life was not in vain. His soul is at peace with his Heavenly Father. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Federated church, conducted by Rev. William Richards. Interment in the Fairmont cemetery. Among the out-of-town relatives and friends attending the services were Dale Lefler of Hollywood, Cal.; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Harms and Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Brown, Grand Island; Mrs. Nora Pinneo, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Pinneo and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Lefler and Carol Jean of York, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Searls of Hastings. Due to illness, a daughter-in-aw, Mrs. Amanda Gearhart, was unable to be present. A grandson, Gerald G. Lefler was also unable to be here.
