Description	:	William Imus and his brother Giles were born in Pike County, Illinois to Alpheus and Louisa Imus. They were orphaned by 1850, their parents reportedly dying in a cholera epidemic. They were then raised by their grandmother, Lucinda Burlingame Imus, and are listed with her in the 1850 census in Stark County, Illinois. About 1855 Lucinda and the boys moved to Ringgold County, Iowa, where William joined the Army at age 16, on July 4, 1861, serving in Company G of the 4th Iowa Infantry. They were then raised by their grandmother, Lucinda Burlingame Imus, and are listed with her in the 1850 census in Stark County, Illinois. He re-enlisted August 22, 1862 as a 5th Sergeant, serving in Company K of the 39th Iowa Infantry until he was mustered out June 5, 1865 as a 1st Sergeant. William married Sarah Combs in Worth County, Missouri on August 26, 1866. They lived in Sidney, Iowa until about 1885 when they moved to Bartlett, Nebraska, where William homesteaded, and he also served as sheriff of Wheeler County for several years. They had 13 children, 9 of which survived to adulthood. He applied for a military pension at age 47, in 1892, receiving $ 6.00 per month. The family moved about that time to Nance County, Nebraska.
