William and Mary moved to Florida where they were Pioneers of Flagler Beach. THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE, Bunnell, Florida, dated Thursday, December 5, 1940 OBITUARY William H. Lewis, pioneer resident of Flagler Beach, died at his home there, early Sunday morning, December 1, following an illness of several months. Mr. Lewis was a native of Illinois, but came to Flagler County in March, 1913, to make his home. In December of the same year he and Mrs. Lewis moved to Flagler Beach where they resided in the first house which was erected on what is now known as the "Beach side." He suffered a paralytic stroke about 18 months ago and had been confined to his home since that time with the exception of a few brief visits to Bunnell. He was 78 years of age last January 28. "Uncle Bill," as he was familiarly known to his many friends, served as bridge tender for the drawbridge over the Florida Inland Waterway for many year's during which time he made many friends among sportsmen who enjoy fishing their annually. Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at the graveside in Hope Cemetery. Rev. W. T. Brantley, pastor of the local Methodist church, officiated, leading both the Church and Masonic funeral services which were used. Mr. Lewis was a member of both organizations. Arrangements were in charge of Carl Davis and Son of Palatka. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary Lewis of Flagler Beach: two daughters, Mrs. Laura Truitt of Ceutralia, Ill., and Mrs. Dora Newman of Sandabal, Ill.; two sons, Willie Lewis of Dickson (should read Dixon), Ill., and George Lewis of Los Angeles, Calf. Sixteen grandchildren also survive. Active pallbearers were: George Moody, D. M. Hughes, M. B. Fuller, T. E. Holden, H. A. Eisenbach and George Wickline. Honorary pallbearers included: C. D. Toler, J. J. Miller, C. E. Ranger, Charles Parker, Rob Raulerson, Harry Sutherland, E. W. Johnston, Ed Johnson, Dave Roberts, D. D. Moody, Frank Mercer, Earl Brockett, R. S. Tolan, Richard Mosby and A. A. Brantley of Bunnell Methodist Church officiating. Masonic rites were held at the grave. Besides the widow, Mrs. Mary Ann Miller Lewis, two sons and two daughters survive. They are George Lewis, Los Angeles, Calif., and William Lewis, Dixon, Ill., and Mrs. Laura Truitt, Centralia, Ill., and Mrs. Doris Newman, Sandoval, Ill. W. Carl Davis & Son conducted the funeral.
