HARVEY ADAMS William Harvey Adams, a long-time Shelton resident, died of cancer on Sunday, August 12, at Mason General Hospital. He was 87. He was born July 20, 1914 near Goldendale to Royal Edwin Adams and Nancy Elizabeth "Bessie" (Jackson) Adams. He attended school in Klickitat for two years, in Vancouver for eight years and in Colton, Oregon, for the final two years, graduating from Colton High School. He played baseball on several school, town, county and American Legion teams, and was lettered in basketball and tennis as well. As the Great Depression wound down, Mr. Adams worked at various jobs in the woods and on farms. In December 1935, he came to Shelton to help elderly relatives deliver the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Later he went to work in Shelton for Rayonier in the pulp mill industry. He worked there for 21 years, interrupted by nearly four years of service in the Navy during World War II. He was discharged with the rank of first-class fire controlman after spending 37 months aboard the battle ship USS Washington in the Pacific. Back at Rayonier after the war, he became an electrician and belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for 32 years. After Rayonier closed its Shelton mill in 1957, Mr. Adams went to work as a mill electrician for Simpson Timber Company. Seventeen years later, he left Simpson to do construction work through the electrical workers' union. He retired in 1979. While in Shelton, he became a member of the First Baptist Church. He was baptized in 1937 and held numerous positions in the local church organization. He taught Sunday school for many years. He married Thelma Margarette Wickersham in 1942. They moved to their Island Lake home in 1945. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, two sisters and three brothers. Besides his wife, Mr. Adams is survived by sons Thom Adams of Shelton and Edwin Adams; daughter Sally Carpenter of Shelton; brother Wesley Adams of Portland, Oregon; and ten grand-children. A memorial service has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, August 24 at the Shelton First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Spring Creek Cemetery near Goldendale. Memorial gifts in Mr. Adams' name may be made to the Shelton First Baptist Church, 428 West Cota Street, Shelton. The arrangements are under the direction of McComb Funeral Home in Shelton.
