Dad began a career as a “fireman” for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). He often played the part of Santa Claus for the company Children’s party.I remember Dad taking me on the train several times on the trips to Rocky Mountain House. Many summer camping trips were taken in the West Country. We travelled the David Thompson Highway when it was only trek in the mountains. We had to get travelling early in the morning before the snow started to melt and the streams became too deep to ford. In his early years he was an avid hunter of big game and birds. I remember that one fall there were 3 moose hanging in the garage. His work mate, Gavin Clark, shared the love of hunting. One trip that Dad would like to forget was the time he shot a hole in the car while he was showing us boys how to un-load a shot gun. Luckily the blast just missed the gas tank. Dad was a highly skilled mechanic and carpenter. He built a 1950 Austin car for us boys. One had a solid body, while the other one had a good engine. His garage was always fully supplied with his mechanical and wood working tools. Dad’s next career was in the trucking business where he started “Red Deer Transport Limited”.I accompanied Dad on many trips to Calgary at the expense of my school studies. Next was a career as a “gas fitter” for Parkland Propane. Around 1986, they sold the house in Mountview and purchased the farm site of his brother-in -law Bruce Brownlee.With the help of his brother Harold and all us family members the land was cleared and a magnificent acreage was established. W. H. Berry and Sons Transport Limited was established with his sons Wayne and William. The initially routes within Alberta were eventually replaced with long-haul routes to Houston, Texas. After leaving the trucking industry, Dad purchased the school bus route from Bud Dolphin to support the acreage. The acreage was a lot of work, but immense pride to the whole family. It won several awards for best landscaping. For additional income, he also worked for an oil services company. Unfortunately, he slipped on a ladder and broke his leg in several locations.This resulted in his inability to maintain the acreage. A new home in Red Deer was purchased and he continued to drive school bus until his ill health forced him to retire. After a lengthy battle with his cancer he passed away at the age of 72, on Aug 26, 2001. His ashes are interned at the Raven Cemetery. The ashes of his dog, “Bud” have also been placed at his grave site.
