The family received the ashes in 2018. In November 2018 he was buried with his brother roy who died in 1922. William was born in Nebraska on 12/16/1898. He reportedly had a developmental disability from birth. His mother, Emma Jane Wynant, was born in Indiana in 1871. His father, James Miller Henry, a farmer, was born in Illinois in 1869. James & Emma were married on 7/14/1890 in Hayes County, Nebraska. William’s mother had at least 11 children. She may have had two others who died between 1890 and 1900. Among Emma’s known children were: Earl J. (born in 1892), Guy E. (in 1894), Ella Beatrice (in 1895), Robert (in 1892), William (in 1898), Harley (about 1901), James (about 1903), Fern (about 1904), John (about 1906), Roy (about 1907), and Mary (about 1909). Except for Robert who was born in Iowa the others were born in Nebraska. At the time of the 1900 census William was 1 year old living with his parents and siblings in Galena, Hayes County, Nebraska. During the 1910 census William was 12 years old, attending school and living with his parents in Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin. Consistently on censuses it was reported William was able tor read and write. He eventually achieved a 6th grade education. About 1913 the family moved to Iowa. In the 1915 Iowa State census William was living with his family in Jefferson Township, Fayette County. When the World War I draft registration was collected in 1918 William was living in Stoneham, Weld County, Colorado with his parents. It was noted that William who was tallied slender with brown hair and brown eyes was “crippled in left limb.” His signature on the form showed that he struggled with writing. In the census of 1920 William was living with his parents and younger siblings in Stoneham, Weld County, Colorado. William was working as a farm laborer. His father was a general farm and William was probably working for him. William was single all his life. In 1926 he was unemployed and living in Yamhill County, Oregon with his parents. On 3/31/1926 William was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. After being a patient at the institution for 3 1/2 years died there on 11/7/1929. He was 30 years old. The cause of death was listed on his death certificate as “exhaustion of dementia.” It was said this condition had developed 4 months earlier. The doctor also noted William had “congenital feeblemindedness.” It is noteworthy and curious that the state managed the nearby Oregon State Institution for the Feeble Minded in Salem for people who had developmental disabilities but William was not placed there. Instead he was placed in the facility for the mentally ill. In 1933 William’s sister Mary Henry married William Byerley while she living in the Yamhill/Marion counties area. She stayed in Oregon the rest of her life. In 1935 William’s parents were living in Seattle, Washington and by the time of the 1940 census they were living in Escondido, San Diego County, California. William’s mother died on 8/17/1951 in San Diego County and his father died there on 2/20/1955. His brother Earl died in Colorado in 1964. His sister Mary Jane (Henry) Byerley Sherman died in 2003 in Salem.
