He had been visiting a few days at the home of his daughter and husband, Mr. and mrs. Ray McCoy northeast of Villisca, when he was stricken with influenza which developed into pneumonia. Mr. Freeland was born February 3, 1857, in Dekorra, Wisconsin and his early life was spent as a four miller in Wisconsin and South Dakota. He was married to Mary Black at Poynette, Wisconsin on March 16, 1887, and to them five children were born. They are Mrs. Clyde Corwin, Holden, Missouri, Dr. E. W. Freeland, Clarinda, Iowa, Mrs. Ray McCoy, Nodaway, Mrs. Frank Query, Villisca, and Lieut Wm. H. Freeland, Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Following his marriage, Mr. Freeland farmed in Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa and 25 years ago he came to Villisca where he was engaged at the carpenter trade. His wife preceded him in death here October 5, 1931, and following her death he made his home with his son in Clarinda. Besides his children, he leaves also two sisters, Mrs. W. F. Kading, Webster, South Dakota, and Mrs. Elizabeth Starlin, Poynette, Wisconsin; one brother Hugh S. Freeland, Poynette, Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. The body was brought Monday to the Fessler & Sutphen Funeral Chapel to await the funeral services which was held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Mortenson. The singing was by Mrs. L. W. Scott, accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Maxey at the organ, and the pall bearers were Frank Query, Villisca, Ray McCoy, Nodaway, Charles dickinson, Stanton, Mrs. E. W. Freeland, Clarinda, Lieut Wm, H. Freeland, Ft. Snelling, Minnesota and Max Corwin, Holden, Missouri. Interment was in the villisca Cemetery. Villisca Review, Friday, February 15, 1935, page 4
